jane dingwall

I was born in Kent, England in 1958 and have always had a great interest in nature and art.  As a young child my love of birds and animals expressed itself mainly through the large and varied menagerie I kept and the wildlife that I encouraged to visit my  garden.  In my early teens I became a member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

My interest in art grew as I progressed through my school years, and was finally awarded GCE 'A' Level in Art in 1975.

Whilst living in London, I married and raised four children,  which left little time for art,  but I became a dab hand in folding nappies!   Although the brushes were put aside for a while I continued to absorb as much information about techniques and other Artists' work as time would allow.

In 1991 we all moved to Australia and settled on the Mornington Peninsula.  There is so much natural beauty and I was immediately struck by the vivid colours of Australian animals and plant life.

The children progressively started school, and some accompanied me to classes.  I had at last found the time for painting again.   I  was fortunate enough to start exhibiting and selling artwork through local art shows and a steady demand for  work exists, selling through exhibitions, galleries, commissions for paintings and illustrative work

Our home is situated in a peaceful bushland environment from which I draw upon much of my inspiration. Nature heavily influences my work. It intrigues me, the continual movement of life that gets missed in the rush of the normal day do day. If I can bring a little of this into focus I feel I've achieved something.
I strive for an intimate understanding of my subject always aspiring  to capture the intricacies of the character and it's surroundings. Then , surrounding myself with reference material, including sketches, photographs, representative animal or bird skins, and any other objects which support the piece I'm working on, I begin the painting, building upon a foundation of good composition, aspects of light and shade and tonal ranges.
I use a range of media depending on the 'feel' of the subject, as I find it’s important to work in a medium which best supports the execution of the subject.

I am currently  a member of the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia Inc.,  the Bird Observers Club of Australia,  The Peninsula Art Society,  The Coloured Pencil Society of America and The Australian Coloured Pencil Network.
